Creating an "Experience"

Posted on Mar 20, 2007 - 5:25PM

After Being in the fitness industry for a combined 22 years, personal trainers are always asking my business partner and I what is the "secret" to success. After a brief grin we both reply "deliver an experience not a program." After a puzzled look from the personal trainer we crack the door to our secrets. We often find personal trainer's whom train with a clipboard and are in the business of program design. Truth be told, in the current internet savvy world there is nothing a personal trainer can teach a client that they can't find on the net or in a book. After delivering a "consultation" (not recommended by Alter Ego) many trainers find themselves trying to close clients. This creates an awkward situation for the trainer and the potential client. The end result the client leaves or if you are lucky 1 in 5 buys sessions. Here are a few things that will make you better than 75% of the trainers in the industry:

  • The days of clipboard training are over (toss it out and never retrieve it)

  • Quit writing programs

  • Get Hands on (manual resistance and assistance are a great way build a relationship with your clients)

  • Know and understand time under tension. (muscles don't count reps)

  • Deliver an experience (if they can do it on their own why would they need you?)
