State Of The Industry Posted on Mar 25, 2007 - 7:36AM I'm sitting here on a sunday morning watching a show that will remain nameless, and Im blow away by the poor advice that is given in just 5 minutes. Here are just a few examples of what was said on the show: "A great way to stretch is yoga" and "wearing a weight vest while running is a great way to burn off the extra calories." Lets first cover yoga, you cant effectively stretch a muscle that is "holding you up" if its contracting it cant be stretched fully. Don't get me wrong yoga has its place as strengthing and stabilization component to your exercise regiment, but as a "strectching" component that is poor advice. The next thing is a weight vest, really? The person whom hasn't exercised in years is going to take that as truth. They will have 1-2 outings and their knees, ankles and low back will hurt and they will never come back. Lets just get the general population off of the couch and reserve the weight vest for the athletes! This is the start of the problems that the industry faces. The onslaught of poor media on a daily basis gets the average person confused on their personal fitness. Can we please take a moment before we put the next "expert" on the t.v. How about checking the credentials and ensuring they are more than a pretty face in spandex. Mark Leeling |
